CREATIVE LIVING.

Belonging. Connection. Possibility.

Finding the right home is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make alongside your loved one.

At Creative Abilities we believe a home is more than four walls — it’s a place to belong, to connect, and to thrive.

Daily Life, Your Way

We co-design personalised, interdependent living experiences that encourage connection, recreation, and personal growth.

In our small, shared homes, each person lives alongside three to five housemates with the support of a dedicated Care Coach team available 24/7.

Every detail — from daily routines to lifelong goals — is shaped together to reflect each person’s needs, choices, and aspirations.

We’re often asked what a typical day looks like for someone supported by Creative Abilities. Meet Henning and DJ as they give you a quick glimpse into part of their day — full of connection, choice, and a few good laughs along the way!

Eligibility

The adults that choose to make a Creative Abilities house their home are typically funded by the New Zealand Government, either through the Ministry of Social Development or ACC.

Eligibility and acceptance for government-funded care in Auckland are determined by Kaikaranga (formerly Taikura Trust) as part of the Needs Assessment process. In some cases, private or individualised funding may also be an option.

Once eligibility for residential care has been confirmed by Kaikaranga or ACC, you can request that your Needs Assessment be shared with us.

If you’re unsure about funding or eligibility, we’re here to help — think of us as your first port of call to guide you through the process.

Eligibility in 3 Steps

1. Assessment

Begin with a Needs Assessment through Kaikaranga (formerly Taikura Trust) or ACC.

To request a residential care assessment with Kaikaranga, you can self-refer by contacting them directly via their website. You can also have a doctor, family member, or another professional submit a referral on your behalf, with your consent.

2. Funding Confirmed

Funding is provided by the Ministry of Social Development, ACC, or in some cases, private/individualised funding.

3. Share With Us

Once eligibility is confirmed, you ask for your assessment to be shared with Creative Abilities as well as other providers so you know what is available to you.

Not sure where to start? We’re happy to guide you through the process.

Choosing residential care is a big step.

When’s the Right Time to Start the Discussion?

Families often come to us when:

  • Their loved one is ready to move on from school or home, or there has been a change in home circumstances and supports available.

  • They want a long-term option that delivers a life full of joy and meaningful experiences, combined with safety and stability.

  • They’re planning ahead and exploring future options early, even if the time to move isn’t right just yet.

You don’t have to be ready to make the move right now — and that’s okay. Sometimes the first step is simply learning what’s available, what might work best for your whānau, and what options will help ensure you find the right fit when the time is right.
